Abstract: This is a follow-up to a previous pre-registration: https://osf.io/rbkuh Japanese pitch accent is crucial for L2 learners to master in order to communicate effectively with native speakers. Pitch accent in Japanese is phonemic, meaning that it varies by word and can mark the difference between otherwise alike words. For example, /kami/ means ‘god’ with a high-low (HL) pitch pattern, while it means ‘hair’ with a LH pitch pattern. Although pitch accent is highly important in Japanese, it can be very difficult for many L2 learners to perceive and acquire, especially native English speakers, as English does not make distinctions based on pitch. Our previous research evaluated Japanese naive participants using a pre/post test design and one of three training conditions: (1) audio and a flat written notation, (2) audio and a visual spatial written notation, and (3) audio with visual spatial written notation and left hand gestures that trace the pitch accent pattern of the words (Friedman, Shiner, Kaicher, Kelly, ...
